Golf through the winter can be a tough ordeal, but not golfing through the colder seasons can also be a heartbreaker. Switch Up Your Game

Due to the change in conditions, a few tweaks to how you play should improve your winter golfing dramatically.

As the ball ay not travel as far in lower temperatures, you may want to club up to account for this. You'll already be aiming for the best shot possible, but getting it wrong can be less forgiving in the winter when fairways and greens are softer and reduce roll. Focus on your accuracy to avoid having to dig your ball out of some sticky situations.

Switch Up Your Kit

Colder temperatures mean more than just wrapping up in layers. According to the U.S. Golf Association, a golf ball will travel 2 yards less for every 10 degree drop in temperature, meaning the cold can change your game significantly. The best way to mitigate this is to keep your golf balls warm, either by keeping them with some hand warmers or placing them in a warm pocket before playing. Alternatively, you can choose to play with a softer ball throughout the colder months.

Keeping equipment clean is crucial during the winter months, where the course is usually wet and can get muddy. Clubs and balls can get clogged with dirt easily, so regular cleaning will keep all your equipment performing optimally.

Dressing appropriately will also hugely impact your round. Being cold is a miserable ordeal as it is, trying to properly concentrate on your game whilst cold? Not ideal. Dressing for the weather with tactical layering and a versatile set up that will keep you comfortable all day will make all the difference.

Take The Advantage

Courses in the winter are ideal for upping your game. This is the time to take advantage of the quieter greens and use the time to practice. Work on your weaknesses without the time pressure of someone waiting to play their hole.

Spending some time at the driving range is also a good way to pass this season, without the distraction of the sunny day you could be spending on the course. On the days when the weather is bad, you can focus on improving your swing ready for the warmer months on the green.

Finesse the Fitness

In the height of golfing season, when the sun is out and the course is pristine, it can be incredibly hard to recognise where your fitness is lacking and focus on improving it. Winter is the perfect time to practice those drills, work on your flexibility and core fitness. The hours you put in over this period will pay off when your numbers begin to improve, use this time wisely!
